EDITORS COMMENTS
This striking photograph captures Arthur, Duke of Connaught and Strathearn (1850-1942), the third son of Queen Victoria, as he confidently rides his red horse during a parade or inspection in the early 20th century. The Duke, who served in the British Army for over 50 years, is seen here in the uniform of the 3rd (The Buffs) Regiment of Foot, a regiment with which he had a strong association. Born on May 1, 1850, at Buckingham Palace, Arthur was educated at home and at the Royal Military Academy, Woolwich. He joined the army in 1868 and saw active service in the Anglo-Egyptian War and the Second Anglo-Afghan War. In 1874, he married Princess Louise Margaret of Prussia, and they had three children. In 1889, Arthur was appointed as the Governor General of Canada, a role he held until 1893. He was known for his support of Canadian industry and his efforts to improve the living conditions of the indigenous population. After leaving Canada, he served in various military and diplomatic roles, including as the Viceroy and Governor-General of India from 1899 to 1905. During World War I, Arthur served as the Commander-in-Chief of the British Home Forces and later as the Governor of the Isle of Wight. In the interwar period, he continued to serve in various military and ceremonial roles, including as the Colonel-in-Chief of several regiments. This photograph, taken likely in the 1920s or 1930s, shows Arthur in his later years, but still with the same regal bearing and military prowess that marked his long and distinguished career. The Duke of Connaught passed away on January 16, 1942, at the age of 91, leaving behind a rich legacy as a soldier, statesman, and member of the British royal family.
