This evocative illustration depicts the march of two prominent Confederate divisions, Kershaw's and Fitz Lee's, as they advanced through the picturesque valley of Virginia in the autumn of 1864. The scene is set during the critical campaign for the control of the Shenandoah Valley, a strategic region that held significant importance for both the Confederate and Union armies. The Confederate forces, led by Generals J.E.B. Stuart and Jubal Early, were determined to hold the valley and prevent Union General Philip Sheridan from advancing further south. In response, Sheridan, commanding the Federal Cavalry, led a decisive campaign to drive the Confederates out of the region. In this illustration, we see the Confederate soldiers, clad in their gray uniforms and armed with muskets, making their way up the valley.
