EDITORS COMMENTS
This evocative photograph captures the Company and Band of the Training Ship Wellesley, stationed on the River Tyne at North Shields in Northumberland. Established in 1868 by local businessmen, including James Hall, as a charitable institution to provide shelter for Tyneside waifs and train young men for naval service, the Wellesley became their base in 1874. The young boys, dressed in their smart uniforms and standing proudly aboard the ship, are shown paying rapt attention to their musical instructors as they practice on their brass instruments. In the 1860s and 1870s, poverty was rampant in the region, and many children were left to fend for themselves in workhouses. The Training Ship Wellesley offered these boys a chance to learn valuable skills, such as seamanship and music, and provided them with transportation to and from the ship. The institution's focus on education and training was a crucial step towards breaking the cycle of poverty and offering these young men a path to a better future. The photograph, taken in the late 1800s, shows the boys hard at work, with the ship's rigging in the background. The Wellesley Nautical School continued to operate until a fire in 1914 forced it to move ashore. This image is a poignant reminder of the important role that charitable institutions played in the lives of Tyneside's young people during a time of great need.
