EDITORS COMMENTS
1. Title: "Commander E.R.G.R. Evans of HMS Broke: A Heroic Naval Officer and Polar Explorer of World War I" This evocative black-and-white photograph captures the stern gaze and resolute determination of Commander Edward Russell Garth Evans (1883-1917), a British naval officer and renowned Antarctic explorer who served aboard HMS Broke during World War I. Evans, who was later awarded a Baronetcy for his gallantry, is depicted in his full naval uniform, complete with the distinctive cap of a destroyer commander. Born in Dover, England, Evans joined the Royal Navy in 1900 and quickly distinguished himself as a capable and dedicated sailor. In 1914, he was appointed as the commanding officer of HMS Broke, a destroyer that saw action in the Battle of Jutland, the largest naval battle of World War I. However, Evans' greatest achievements came during his expeditions to the Antarctic. In 1915, he led a daring relief mission to rescue the stranded Imperial Trans-Antarctic Expedition, which was attempting to be the first to traverse the continent. Evans and his crew faced treacherous ice floes, freezing temperatures, and the constant threat of German submarines. Despite these challenges, they successfully rescued the expedition's members, saving them from certain death. Evans' heroism did not go unnoticed, and he was later awarded the Distinguished Service Order for his bravery. Tragically, he would not live to see the end of the war. In 1917, while leading another mission to the Antarctic, Evans' ship, HMS Southern Empress, was lost in a storm, taking Evans and his entire crew with it. This photograph is a poignant reminder of the courage and sacrifice of Commander Evans and the crew of HMS Broke, who risked their lives to serve their country and further the cause of exploration in the face of adversity.
