1881 37th Foot Greensmith Hampshire Malcolm Pike Plume Regiment Satchel Sergeant Tall Tassles 67th

EDITORS COMMENTS
This striking painting by Malcolm Greensmith captures the essence of a Colour Sergeant from the 37th Regiment of Foot, a historic British military regiment that played a significant role in the annals of the army. The regiment, also known as the "Blenheim Boys" or "Sixteenth Light Infantry," was formed in 1685 and saw action in numerous battles, including the Battle of Blenheim in 1704 and the Battle of Dettingen in 1743. The Colour Sergeant depicted in the painting wears the distinctive uniform of the North Hampshire Regiment, which was formed when the 37th Regiment of Foot amalgamated with the 67th South Hampshire Regiment in 1881. The tall, imposing figure is dressed in a red coat with gold lacing and brass buttons, adorned with a plumed hat and carrying a satchel slung over his shoulder. His coat bears the regimental badge of the three leopards' heads, a symbol of the Duke of Richmond, who was the colonel of the regiment at the time. The Colour Sergeant holds a pike in his right hand, signifying his role as a non-commissioned officer responsible for bearing the regimental colours in battle. The colours, which include the regimental flag and the Queen's colour, are displayed on a pole at his side. The regimental colours were a source of great pride and inspiration to the soldiers, and their protection was a vital duty. The painting captures the historical significance of the regiment and the important role of the Colour Sergeant in military tradition. The intricate details of the uniform, from the tassels on the hat to the folds of the coat, bring the painting to life, transporting us back in time to the days of the British Army in the late 19th century.
