EDITORS COMMENTS
This evocative illustration captures the moment of bravery and heroism displayed by Colonel Sir Redvers Henry Buller (1839-1908) during the intense skirmish with Zulu warriors on Inhlobane Mountain in 1879, during the Anglo-Zulu War. The image, published by the Illustrated London News Ltd, depicts Buller (centre, on horseback) gallantly rescuing Captain D. Arcy from the clutches of the enemy. This act of valor was one of three that earned Buller the prestigious Victoria Cross, the highest military decoration for valor in the face of the enemy. Buller, a British Army officer, played a pivotal role in the Battle of Inhlobane, which took place on January 22, 1879. The battle saw the British forces, led by Buller, attempting to dislodge the Zulu army from the mountain stronghold. The illustration shows the intensity of the skirmish, with Zulu warriors in full attack mode, and Buller's quick thinking and courage in the face of danger. Buller's acts of bravery during the Battle of Inhlobane were not limited to the rescue of Captain Arcy. He also led a successful charge against the Zulu forces, and later, when the British forces were in retreat, he rallied his men and led them to a victory against overwhelming odds. The Victoria Cross was awarded to Buller on December 7, 1900, in recognition of his gallantry during the Zulu War. The decoration was presented to him by King Edward VII at a ceremony held at Buckingham Palace. Buller went on to have a distinguished military career, rising to the rank of General and serving in various conflicts, including the Second Boer War. This historical illustration is a testament to the courage and leadership displayed by Colonel Sir Redvers Henry Buller during the Battle of Inhlobane and his subsequent recognition for his bravery with the Victoria Cross.
