Pearson, born in 1830, had already amassed an impressive military record before his appointment as the Commanding Officer of the 2/24th Regiment of Foot, also known as the Second Essex Regiment, in 1864. The Zulu War, fought between the British Empire and the Zulu Kingdom, was a significant turning point in the history of Africa. The conflict began when the British, seeking to expand their territorial holdings, invaded Zululand. Pearson, who had previously served in Africa during the Ashanti War, was tasked with leading a column of British troops to reinforce the besieged garrison at Eshowe.
