1889 Bandit Bandits Capture Cole Crime Crimes Criminal Criminals Gang Member Notorious Outlaw Outlaws Robber Younger
EDITORS COMMENTS
In this striking photograph, taken in 1889, the notorious American outlaw Cole Younger is seen after his capture. Younger, born on January 20, 1844, in Missouri, was a prominent member of the James-Younger gang, one of the most notorious criminal organizations of the 19th century in the United States. The James-Younger gang was known for their daring train robberies, committing their first heist in 1866 and continuing their criminal exploits until the late 1870s. Younger, along with his brothers Jim and Bob, and the James brothers, Frank and Jesse, became infamous for their audacious crimes and their ability to evade law enforcement. Despite their notoriety, the James-Younger gang's reign of terror came to an end when they were finally cornered by the Pinkerton National Detective Agency in 1876. Cole Younger was captured on August 13, 1889, in Joplin, Missouri, after a long period of hiding. He was arrested by U.S. Marshal Edwin V. Haley and was sentenced to 10 years in prison. This photograph captures Younger in his late forties, with a stoic expression and a neatly trimmed beard. The image serves as a reminder of a bygone era of American history, when the lines between law and outlaw were often blurred, and the allure of the wild west beckoned to those seeking adventure and fortune. Despite his criminal past, Cole Younger remains an intriguing figure in American history, a symbol of the wild west and the daring spirit of the frontier. This photograph offers a glimpse into the life of a man who, for better or worse, left an indelible mark on the American story.
