EDITORS COMMENTS
This striking portrait captures the enigmatic figure of George Clifford, 3rd Earl of Cumberland (1558-1605), a man known for his notorious gambling habits and ownership of a private fleet. Clifford's piercing gaze and long, curly hair are framed by an elaborate, lace-trimmed hat, adding to his air of wealth and distinction. Born in 1558, Clifford was the eldest son of the 2nd Earl of Cumberland and Lady Margaret Clifford. He rose to prominence under Queen Elizabeth I, serving as a naval commander and ambassador. However, it was his love of gambling that would define his later years. Clifford was a notorious risk-taker, known to wager vast sums of money and even his own ships in high-stakes games. Despite his extravagant habits, Clifford also had a practical side. He owned a large private fleet, which he used to transport goods and supplies between England and the Low Countries. This fleet proved invaluable during the Anglo-Spanish War, as Clifford was able to provide the English navy with much-needed supplies and intelligence. Despite his wealth and influence, Clifford's gambling debts eventually caught up with him. In 1605, he was forced to sell many of his possessions, including several of his ships, to pay off his debts. Clifford died later that year, leaving behind a complex legacy. While he was remembered as a notorious gambler, he was also revered as a skilled naval commander and a shrewd businessman. This portrait, which dates from the late 16th or early 17th century, offers a glimpse into the life of a man who defied easy categorization. With his piercing gaze and elaborate costume, Clifford remains a fascinating figure in English history, a reminder of the complexities and contradictions that often define the lives of those who have shaped our past.
