EDITORS COMMENTS
Cleopatra VII, the last Pharaoh of Ancient Egypt, is depicted in this hauntingly beautiful image as she takes her own life with the iconic asp. The year was 30 BC, and Cleopatra, who had ruled Egypt for over two decades, had recently lost the Battle of Actium to her brother-in-law and Rome's greatest military leader, Octavian (later known as Augustus). Faced with the imminent conquest of Egypt by the Romans, Cleopatra saw no other way out but to end her own life. The image captures the moment of Cleopatra's final act of defiance, as she raises the asp, a venomous snake, to her breast. The serene expression on her face, devoid of fear or pain, speaks volumes about her strength and determination. The elegant drapery of her gown, adorned with gold and precious stones, adds to the regal and royal atmosphere of the scene. Cleopatra VII, who was known for her intelligence, beauty, and political acumen, had managed to maintain Egypt's independence for over twenty years, despite the constant threat of Roman invasion. She was also the mother of several children with two of Rome's most powerful men - Julius Caesar and Mark Antony. However, her reign came to an end in this tragic and dramatic way, leaving behind a legacy that continues to fascinate historians and scholars to this day. This image is a poignant reminder of the complex and fascinating life of one of history's most intriguing figures. The serene and regal demeanor of Cleopatra, even in her final moments, is a testament to her indomitable spirit and the enduring power of the human will.
