Cleopatra Macdonald

EDITORS COMMENTS
Cleopatra VII, also known as Cleopatra Selene II, was the last active ruler of the Ptolemaic Kingdom of Egypt. Born in 69 BC, she was the daughter of Ptolemy XII Auletes and Cleopatra V Tryphaina, and a sister to Ptolemy XIII and Ptolemy XIV. Cleopatra VII is perhaps the most famous of the Ptolemaic queens due to her romantic liaisons with two of the most powerful men of the Roman Republic: Julius Caesar and Mark Antony. In this image, Cleopatra VII is depicted in regal attire, adorned with the symbols of her power and authority. The royal diadem, adorned with the falcon of Egypt, sits atop her head, while the uraeus, a symbol of divine protection, is coiled around her forehead. Her clothing is richly embroidered and adorned with precious jewels, reflecting the wealth and opulence of the Egyptian court. Cleopatra VII was known for her intelligence, beauty, and political acumen. She was fluent in nine languages and was renowned for her ability to charm and manipulate her allies and enemies alike. She used her charisma and diplomatic skills to maintain Egypt's independence from Rome for as long as possible. Despite her many accomplishments, Cleopatra VII's reign ended tragically. In 30 BC, she allied herself with Mark Antony against Octavian (later known as Augustus) in the final Roman civil war. After Antony's defeat at the Battle of Actium, Cleopatra and Antony retreated to Egypt, where they committed suicide rather than be taken prisoner by Octavian. Their deaths marked the end of the Hellenistic world and the beginning of the Roman Empire. This photograph print, from Mary Evans Picture Library, offers a glimpse into the mysterious and enchanting world of Cleopatra VII, the last pharaoh of ancient Egypt.
