EDITORS COMMENTS
This photograph, taken in 1883, depicts a historic moment on the Embankment in London as Cleopatra's Needle, an ancient Egyptian obelisk, becomes a new landmark for the city's residents and visitors. The Needle, which was erected on its current site in 1878 after being transported from Alexandria, Egypt, is shown here surrounded by the excitement and curiosity of six local children and their dog. The children, dressed in Victorian attire, are seen clustered around the base of the obelisk, their expressions filled with wonder and awe as they explore the intricate hieroglyphics etched into the stone. The family dog, a loyal companion, sits at their feet, adding a touch of playfulness to the scene. The Embankment, a popular promenade along the River Thames, was a hub of activity during this time, and the arrival of Cleopatra's Needle was a major event. The obelisk, which dates back to 1300 BC, was originally erected in Heliopolis, Egypt, and was later moved to Alexandria during the Roman period. It was then transported to England as a gift from the Khedive of Egypt, Ismail Pasha, to mark Queen Victoria's Golden Jubilee in 1883. This photograph captures a moment in history, showcasing the fascination and curiosity of the young generation towards the ancient world and their new cultural icon. The image also highlights the connection between Egypt and England during this period, as well as the importance of the Embankment as a gathering place for Londoners.
