EDITORS COMMENTS
This image portrays Rhea, the ancient Greek goddess of fertility and the mother of six deities: Zeus, Hera, Hades, Poseidon, Demeter, and Hestia. Daughter of Uranus and Gaea, Rhea was also the sister and wife of Kronos, the king of the gods. The mythological narrative surrounding Rhea is rich and complex. According to legend, Kronos overthrew his father Uranus and ruled the cosmos with an iron fist. Fearing that one of his children would overthrow him, just as he had done to his father, Kronos swallowed each of his offspring as they were born. However, Rhea, with the help of her parents and the goddess Metis, managed to hide Zeus from Kronos. Rhea gave Kronos a stone wrapped in swaddling clothes, which he swallowed, believing it to be the newborn infant. When Zeus grew up, he sought revenge against his father. With the help of his siblings, Zeus managed to free them from Kronos's belly. In gratitude, Rhea was given the title of 'Mother of the Gods.' She was also known as the 'Great Mother' and was revered for her nurturing and protective qualities. This photograph, taken from the extensive collection at Mary Evans Picture Library, captures the essence of Rhea's mythological significance and her role as the mother of the gods in the classical world. The image's intricate details and the goddess's serene expression convey her strength, wisdom, and maternal love. The rich history and mythology surrounding Rhea continue to captivate and inspire us, making her an enduring figure in the annals of classical mythology.
