EDITORS COMMENTS
This exquisite oval portrait captures the enigmatic and intellectually brilliant Queen Christina of Sweden (1626-1689), who reigned from 1632 to 1654. Known for her patronage of arts and learning, Christina was a trailblazer for women in the 17th century. She defied traditional gender roles and pursued an education in theology, philosophy, and mathematics, often dressing as a man to attend lectures and debates. In this portrait, Christina is depicted in a low-neckline gown, her ringlets cascading down her shoulders, and a regal expression on her face. The queen's piercing gaze and confident posture convey her intelligence and determination. The intricate details of the portrait, from the delicate lace collar to the intricate embroidery on her gown, highlight the opulence of the Swedish court during her reign. Christina's love for learning and the arts led her to amass an impressive collection of books, which she donated to the University of Uppsala upon her abdication. She also invited renowned artists, scholars, and musicians to her court, including the famous composer, Henry Du Mont. Despite her many accomplishments, Christina's reign was not without controversy. Her unconventional behavior, including her refusal to marry and her conversion to Catholicism, sparked opposition from the Swedish nobility. In 1654, she was forced to abdicate and went into exile in Rome, where she continued to support the arts and scholarship until her death in 1689.
