EDITORS COMMENTS
In this image from Chinese history, Empress Wu Zetian (625-705), the only woman to ever rule as emperor in China's imperial history, is depicted in her resplendent imperial robes, surrounded by the opulence and grandeur of the Forbidden City. The Empress, who rose from humble beginnings as a low-ranking concubine to become the most powerful figure in the Tang Dynasty, is shown in her yellow robes, a symbol of her imperial status. Joining her in this historical tableau is a courtier of a later period, Jo-Fei (1103-1141), who is depicted in more subdued, traditional attire. The juxtaposition of these two figures from different eras highlights the rich tapestry of Chinese history and the enduring traditions that have shaped Chinese culture. Empress Wu Zetian's reign was marked by significant political and social reforms, including the promotion of women to high-ranking positions in government and the establishment of a matriarchal court. Her rule was not without controversy, however, and she faced numerous challenges from powerful factions within the imperial court. Jo-Fei, on the other hand, lived during the Song Dynasty, a time of great cultural and artistic flourishing in China. He served as a high-ranking official in the imperial court and was known for his literary and artistic accomplishments. This striking photograph, taken from the extensive archives of Mary Evans Prints Online, offers a rare glimpse into the lives of these two remarkable figures from Chinese history. The rich colors and intricate details of their robes and the ornate decor of the Forbidden City transport us back in time, allowing us to witness firsthand the grandeur and complexity of Chinese imperial life.
