This poignant photograph, taken on the 8th of October in 1939, captures the moment a group of children from Sherborne Nursery School in Kentish Town, London, were being evacuated during the Blitz. The image, which is now held in the archives of Mary Evans Prints Online, shows the children, dressed in their best coats and hats, being led by their teachers through the streets of the town. The date of the evacuation falls just over a month after the outbreak of World War II and the beginning of the relentless air raids that would come to be known as the Blitz.
