John Wesley Jarvis (1780-1840) was an American portrait painter and miniaturist. He was born in South Carolina, but moved to New York City in 1806, where he established a successful studio. His works were highly sought after by the wealthy and influential of the time, including President James Monroe and former Vice President Aaron Burr. His portraits were known for their accuracy and attention to detail. He also painted miniatures on ivory for jewelry pieces, which became popular among the upper classes of New York City.
