EDITORS COMMENTS
This print captures the heartwarming story of Charlie the Swan, a beloved regular visitor to The Rising Sun in Shoreham, Kent. After tragically losing his parents to a fox attack, Charlie found solace and care from the compassionate villagers who took him under their wing. Fed by hand and nurtured with love, he soon became an integral part of this tight-knit community. Although introduced to the nearby River Darent, Charlie's bond with The Rising Sun was unbreakable. Like clockwork, three times a day he would grace the pub's doorstep for a quick feed. Sometimes his determination led him to open the door himself; other times his boisterous calls outside prompted kind-hearted customers to welcome him inside. In this remarkable photograph, we see landlord Frank Coon sharing a moment with Charlie as they enjoy each other's company amidst the rustic charm of The Rising Sun. Their connection is palpable – an embodiment of human-animal camaraderie that transcends boundaries. Dating back to 26 November 1957, this image not only showcases our enduring fascination with animals but also serves as a testament to the power of compassion within communities. It reminds us that even in challenging circumstances, kindness can forge extraordinary bonds between species and bring joy into unexpected places.
