EDITORS COMMENTS
Charles X, the Last of the Bourbons: A Triumphant Entry into Paris, September 1830 This evocative image captures the moment when Charles X, King of France from 1824 to 1830, enters Paris to the plaudits of some of his supporters. The scene is set in September 1830, a time of political instability and unrest in France. King Charles X, wearing the robes of the Order of the Holy Spirit, is depicted on horseback, surrounded by a sea of cheering crowds. The historical context of this photograph is significant, as it marks the last days of the Bourbon monarchy in France. Charles X, known as 'Charles X le Bien-Aime' or 'Charles X the Beloved,' came to power following the abdication of his cousin, King Louis-Philippe I. His reign was marked by conservative policies and the suppression of liberal and democratic movements. However, the economic hardships and political unrest that had been simmering in France for years finally boiled over in July 1830, culminating in the Revolution of 1830. Despite the plaudits of his supporters, Charles X's days as king were numbered. The Revolutionary forces, led by the Duke of Bourbon and the Duke of Orleans, forced him to abdicate on August 2, 1830. Charles X went into exile, first in the United Kingdom and later in England, where he spent the remainder of his days. This photograph is a poignant reminder of a pivotal moment in French history, a time when the monarchy came to an end and the path to the Second Republic was paved. The image captures the excitement and hope of the moment, as well as the uncertainty and instability that marked the end of the Bourbon dynasty in France.
