EDITORS COMMENTS
This evocative image captures the regal presence of Charles, Duke of Orléans, later known as Charles V, Le Sage (the Wise), King of France. Born in 1337, Charles was a pivotal figure in French history, serving as a distinguished general and a generous patron of the arts. Charles' military prowess was evident from an early age. He rose to prominence during the Hundred Years War, leading French forces against the English in numerous battles. However, his true passion lay in the arts and letters. Charles was a true connoisseur, amassing an impressive collection of manuscripts, tapestries, and works of art. He was also a skilled poet and musician, composing numerous works in French and Latin. The image of Charles depicted here shows him in the prime of his life, wearing the insignia of the Order of the Garter and holding a feather fan. The feather fan, a symbol of royalty and rank, underscores his status as a king. The portrait exudes an air of wisdom and sophistication, reflecting Charles' reputation as a wise ruler and patron of the arts. Charles' reign as King of France, which began in 1364, was marked by a period of cultural flourishing. He founded the Bibliothèque Royale (Royal Library), which would later become the Bibliothèque Nationale de France, and established the renowned Château de Rambouillet as a center for literary and artistic pursuits. This historical print, from the esteemed Mary Evans Picture Library, offers a glimpse into the life of a remarkable figure in French history. Charles V Le Sage, the Wise King of France, was a man of many talents, leaving an indelible mark on both the battlefield and the world of art and letters.
