EDITORS COMMENTS
Charles Edward Stuart, also known as Bonnie Prince Charlie, is seen in this poignant moment of his daring escape from British forces following his defeat in the 1745 Jacobite Rebellion. In the aftermath of the Battle of Culloden, the young Scottish claimant to the British throne was hidden from the enemy by Flora MacDonald, a brave local woman, who disguised him as her servant maid, Betty Burke. As they made their way towards the western coast of Scotland to embark on a small fishing boat to the Isle of Skye, Flora and her husband, Allan MacDonald, accompanied Charles, with Flora herself carrying him across the treacherous sands of the Minch to the safety of the waiting vessel. This iconic image of the prince's escape, captured in the arms of Flora MacDonald, symbolizes the deep-rooted passion and loyalty of the Scottish people towards their historical monarchy. The Jacobite Rebellion, which aimed to restore the Stuart monarchy to the British throne, had been fiercely suppressed by the British forces following the Battle of Culloden in April 1746. Charles Edward Stuart, the pretender to the throne, had led the rebellion, but was ultimately defeated and forced to flee. Flora MacDonald's act of defiance and her role in the escape of the prince became a significant event in Scottish and British history, and her name is forever etched in the annals of time as a symbol of courage and resilience. This evocative photograph print, from the Mary Evans Picture Library, captures the essence of this historical moment, transporting us back to a time of passion, rebellion, and the enduring spirit of the Scottish people.
