EDITORS COMMENTS
Charles the Bold, Duke of Burgundy (1433-1477), is depicted in this striking image leading a cavalry charge against the French forces of King Louis XI (1423-1483) around the year 1467. The Duke of Burgundy, known for his bold and impetuous nature, was a formidable military leader who continually waged war against his French counterpart. Born in Dijon, Burgundy, Charles came to power in 1467 following the death of his father, Philip the Good. He quickly set his sights on expanding his territories and asserting his influence in Europe. However, his aggressive expansionist policies put him at odds with the French monarch, Louis XI, who saw Burgundy as a threat to his own power. The years between 1467 and 1477 were marked by a series of military engagements between the two powers. In this image, Charles the Bold is shown in the heat of battle, leading his cavalry charge against the French forces. His determined expression and raised sword convey a sense of resolve and courage, reflecting the Duke's reputation as a fearless warrior. Despite his military prowess, Charles the Bold ultimately met his demise at the Battle of Nancy in 1477, where he was killed by Swiss mercenaries fighting for the French. His death marked the end of the Burgundian State, which had been a significant political and cultural force in Europe during the late Middle Ages. This evocative print, from the Mary Evans Picture Library, offers a glimpse into the tumultuous world of medieval warfare and the complex political dynamics of the time. It serves as a reminder of the bold and daring actions of Charles the Bold, Duke of Burgundy, and the enduring impact of his reign on European history.
