In 1791, he resigned from the navy, disillusioned with the direction the country was taking. Despite his decision to leave the navy, Bois-Hardy could not abandon his commitment to the monarchy. He became involved in various royalist counter-plots, working to undermine the revolutionary government. However, these efforts were discovered, and in 1795, an attack was launched on his home in Paris.
