EDITORS COMMENTS
Cephalus and Procris: A Tale of Jealousy and Reconciliation in Ancient Greek Mythology This image depicts the moment of reunion between Cephalus, a legendary hero from ancient Greek mythology, and his wife Procris. The couple's story is one of love, betrayal, and ultimately, forgiveness. Procris, a beautiful and devoted wife, was known for her inordinate jealousy. Suspecting her husband of infidelity, she deserted him and fled into the woods, leaving Cephalus heartbroken. However, the gods, in their wisdom, intervened and sent Mercury to reassure Cephalus of Procris's innocence. Despite this revelation, Procris remained absent, and Cephalus, longing for her return, went to the temple of Venus in search of guidance. The goddess, moved by his loyalty and love, sent Procris a sign in the form of a dog. The dog, which would later be known as the Hound of Procris, was a gift from Venus, meant to lead Cephalus back to his wife. Cephalus, following the dog's trail, eventually found Procris. She welcomed him back with open arms and another gift - a javelin. This javelin, forged by Hephaestus, was said to be unerring and would never miss its mark. Procris presented it to Cephalus as a symbol of her trust and faith in him. This print, a beautiful representation of the ancient myth, captures the essence of the couple's love story. The intricate details of the figures, the lush greenery, and the serene expression on their faces, all contribute to a captivating and timeless image. The story of Cephalus and Procris is a testament to the power of love and forgiveness, even in the face of suspicion and jealousy.
