1650 Armoury Back Ground Caxton Caxtons Places Westminster

EDITORS COMMENTS
This evocative print captures the historic Caxton's House nestled within the hallowed grounds of the Armoury in Westminster, London, circa 1650. The Tudor-style house, with its distinctive red-tiled roof and timber-framed walls, stands proudly against the backdrop of the magnificent Westminster Abbey. Caxton's House, a significant piece of English literary history, was once the home and printing press of William Caxton, the first engraver and printer to bring the art of printing to England. William Caxton, a Flemish-born English merchant and diplomat, is credited with introducing the printing press to the country in 1476. He set up his printing press in the Armoury, then known as the Blackfriars, and produced some of the earliest printed books in the English language. The house served as both his residence and his workshop, and it is believed that many of his most famous works, including "The Canterbury Tales" and "The Game and Playe of the Chess," were printed there. The print offers a glimpse into the past, transporting us back to a time when the buzz of the printing press filled the air and the exchange of ideas and knowledge was a revolutionary force. The serene setting of the house, nestled amongst the lush greenery of the Armoury grounds, provides a striking contrast to the bustling activity that would have taken place within its walls. The presence of Westminster Abbey in the background further emphasizes the historical significance of Caxton's House. The abbey, a symbol of English history and tradition, has played host to countless royal coronations, weddings, and burials, and its hallowed halls have borne witness to the country's most momentous events. Together, Caxton's House and Westminster Abbey stand as enduring symbols of England's rich literary and historical heritage.
