This historic photograph captures the moment of discovery as English explorer Sir Francis Drake, represented here by his renowned contemporary and fellow seafarer Sir Thomas Cavendish, sails his ship through the treacherous waters of the Straits of Magellan in 1586. Cavendish, who set sail from England in 1586 with a fleet of five ships, aimed to circumnavigate the globe in search of fame, fortune, and new territories for Queen Elizabeth I.
