EDITORS COMMENTS
This evocative portrait captures the regal presence of Catherine of Aragon, the first wife of Henry VIII of England, during her reign from 1509 to 1533. Born on December 16, 1485, in Alcalá de Henares, Spain, Catherine was the daughter of Ferdinand II of Aragon and Isabella I of Castile, the renowned Catholic Monarchs. At the age of 23, Catherine was married to the newly crowned King Henry VIII of England, who was 17 years her senior. Their union was a politically advantageous one, as it strengthened the relationship between England and Spain. Catherine was crowned Queen of England on June 11, 1509, at Westminster Abbey. The portrait showcases Catherine's elegant and refined appearance, with her intricately styled hair, pearl earrings, and a richly embroidered gown. Her expressive eyes convey a sense of intelligence and determination, reflecting her strong will and resilience. However, Catherine's marriage to Henry VIII was not to last. In 1527, Catherine gave birth to a stillborn son, and Henry became infatuated with Anne Boleyn. In 1533, Catherine was formally set aside as Queen, and Anne was crowned in her place. Catherine was later imprisoned in the Tower of London and, in 1536, was charged with treason and adultery. She was beheaded on February 13, 1536, at the age of 50. Despite the tragic end to her marriage and her eventual fate, Catherine is remembered as a strong and influential queen, who played a significant role in English history. This portrait serves as a poignant reminder of her regal beauty and the complexities of the Tudor court.
