EDITORS COMMENTS
This exquisite oval portrait depicts Catherine of Aragon, the first wife of King Henry VIII of England, during her reign from 1509 to 1533. Born in 1485 in Alcala de Henares, Spain, Catherine was the daughter of Ferdinand and Isabella, the Catholic Monarchs of Spain. She was only 23 years old when she married the 17-year-old Henry VIII in 1509. The marriage was a politically advantageous alliance, as Catherine brought a substantial dowry and a strong Spanish connection to the English court. Catherine's reign was marked by her devotion to her duties as queen and her commitment to the Catholic faith. She gave birth to six children, including the future Queen Mary I and Prince Edward VI. However, the marriage became troubled when Catherine failed to produce a male heir to secure the Tudor dynasty. Henry's desire for a male heir led him to seek an annulment of the marriage, which was granted in 1533. Catherine was then replaced by Anne Boleyn as Henry's queen. Despite the unfortunate end to her marriage, Catherine's legacy as a strong and capable queen endured. She continued to serve as a lady-in-waiting to her successor, Anne Boleyn, and later to her daughter Mary I. Catherine's unwavering loyalty to her faith and her determination to uphold her duties as queen made her a respected and influential figure in English history. This beautiful portrait captures the regal beauty and dignity of Catherine of Aragon, a queen who left an indelible mark on the Tudor dynasty and English history.
