Catherine II, also known as Catherine the Great, was the Empress of Russia from 1762 until her death in 1796. Born in Prussia in 1729, she rose to power through a strategic marriage to the heir to the Russian throne, Peter III. After his assassination in 1762, Catherine seized the throne and began a reign marked by significant political and cultural reforms.
