EDITORS COMMENTS
This exquisite cigarette card features an evocative portrait of Catherine of Aragon, the first queen of Henry VIII of England. Born in 1485 in Alcalá de Henares, Spain, Catherine was the daughter of Ferdinand and Isabella, the Catholic Monarchs, and was married to Arthur, Prince of Wales, in 1501 when she was just 15 years old. However, Arthur's untimely death less than a year later left Catherine a widow, and she was eventually married to Henry VIII in 1509, when he was just 17 years old. In this portrait, Catherine is depicted wearing a richly textured velvet gown, adorned with intricate gold jewels and a magnificent brooch at her throat. The brooch, a symbol of her Spanish heritage, is believed to be the insignia of the Order of the Golden Fleece, an order of chivalry founded by her father, Ferdinand. Catherine's expressive face and piercing gaze convey a sense of strength and determination, reflecting her resilience in the face of adversity and her unwavering loyalty to her husband and the Tudor dynasty. Catherine's reign as queen was marked by political intrigue and personal tragedy. She gave birth to Henry's first daughter, Mary, in 1516, but the couple's marriage was later annulled in 1533, following Henry's desire to marry Anne Boleyn. Catherine's refusal to acknowledge Henry's new marriage led to her imprisonment and eventual execution in 1536. Despite her tragic end, Catherine's legacy as the first queen of the Tudor dynasty and the mother of two of England's most famous monarchs, Mary I and Elizabeth I, endures. This stunning portrait serves as a poignant reminder of Catherine's complex and fascinating life, and the indelible mark she left on English history.
