EDITORS COMMENTS
This striking portrait captures Caroline of Brunswick, later known as Queen Caroline or "Caro" Brunswick, in the year 1821, just before her death. The image, taken from Mary Evans Picture Library, offers a glimpse into the life of this complex and controversial figure who was once Queen Consort of King George IV of the United Kingdom. Caroline, born in 1768, was the daughter of Duke Ferdinand of Brunswick and Princess Augusta of Wales. She married Prince George, the future King George IV, in 1795, but their marriage was far from harmonious. Their union was marked by numerous scandals, including accusations of adultery and public humiliation. Despite her tumultuous personal life, Caroline was known for her beauty and fashion sense. In this portrait, she is depicted wearing a voluminous red velvet gown, adorned with intricate white lace and a tall, elaborate white feathered hat. The hat, a symbol of royalty and power, adds an air of grandeur to the image. Caroline's death in 1821, just a few months after being restored to her position as Queen Consort following her husband's accession to the throne, was a significant moment in British history. Her funeral was a grand affair, attended by thousands of mourners, and her legacy continues to be studied by historians and scholars. This portrait, with its rich colors and intricate details, offers a glimpse into the life and style of a fascinating historical figure. The velvet fabric, the white feathers, and the regal posture all contribute to a sense of elegance and power, making this an enduring image of Caroline of Brunswick, Queen Consort of George IV.
