Carl XIV John, also known as Jean-Baptiste-Jules Bernadotte, is depicted in this stunning oval print wearing the uniform of the Swedish-Norwegian army. Born in France in 1763, Bernadotte rose through the ranks of the French military before being exiled following the French Revolution. He later became a Swedish general and was elected King of Sweden and Norway in 1818, taking the regnal name Carl XIV John in 1819. During his reign, Carl XIV John implemented numerous reforms aimed at modernizing Sweden and strengthening its military. He also worked to improve relations with Norway, which had been under Swedish rule since the late 14th century. In 1814, Norway was granted a constitution and a separate parliament, marking the beginning of a more autonomous Norwegian state within the union with Sweden. This print, produced in the mid-19th century, captures Carl XIV John in his prime, with a confident and resolute expression. The intricate details of his uniform, complete with gold braid and decorative epaulets, highlight his military background and status as a monarch. The print also includes the inscription "Min Kongo Carl XIV Johan" (My King Carl XIV John), further emphasizing his role as a revered leader. Carl XIV John's reign came to an end in 1844, when he died at the age of 81. He is remembered as a capable and effective monarch who helped to shape the modern history of Sweden and Norway.
