EDITORS COMMENTS
Carl Herman, the Unassuming Hero of the Browning-Brady Train Robbery (1896) This evocative photograph captures the enigmatic figure of Carl Herman, an unsuspecting bystander who stumbled upon the greatest heist in American railway history. The Browning-Brady train robbery, which took place on September 13, 1896, near Atchison, Kansas, was a daring and meticulously planned crime orchestrated by the notorious outlaw gang, the Wild Bunch. In the chaos that ensued, as bullets flew and gold and silver coins spilled from the overturned express car, Herman, a humble farmhand, saw an opportunity. Braving the gunfire, he managed to stuff his pockets with $30,000 worth of loot, a paltry sum compared to the estimated $60,000 stolen by the gang. Despite the danger and the temptation to keep his newfound fortune, Herman's conscience got the better of him. He turned himself in to the authorities, who were initially skeptical of his story. However, upon discovering the stolen loot in his possession, they were forced to acknowledge his heroism. This photograph, taken in the late 19th century, captures Herman's stoic expression and the weight of the responsibility that now rested upon his shoulders. The image serves as a stark reminder of the moral dilemmas that can arise in the face of temptation and the consequences of choosing the right path, even in the most trying of circumstances.
