1874 Monkey Darwin cartoon by Faustin

" Prof. Darwin" coloured lithograph by Faustin Betbeder, with original Shakespeare quotes in text below. Front page of the " Figaro" paper N. 475, London Wednesday February 18th 1874. It appeared there as an advert for the sister paper, the more expensive London Sketch-Book of the same month. The colour lithograph sample was clipped and stuck on for that purpose. Charles Darwin owned a copy of this version in his own collection (Darwin Archive 140.4). He also kept the associated text clipping which notes " with rare humility (Darwin) owns that his ancestors were apes. It appears that one person believed in the Darwinian theory, which we hold to be evidence that man is descended from a certain long eared quadruped" (donkey). Charles Darwin published The Descent of Man in 1871. This caricature of Charles Darwin as an ape also appeared in the London Sketch Book in 1874 as a souvenir print

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print captures the iconic 1874 Monkey Darwin cartoon by Faustin, a renowned artist of his time. The coloured lithograph, titled "Prof. Darwin" showcases an imaginative caricature of Charles Darwin as an ape, accompanied by original Shakespeare quotes in text below. Originally featured on the front page of the "Figaro" paper N. 475 in London on February 18th, 1874, this artwork served as an advertisement for the sister publication, the esteemed London Sketch-Book. Interestingly enough, Charles Darwin himself owned a copy of this very version in his personal collection and treasured it alongside its associated text clipping. The accompanying note humorously remarks that with rare humility, Darwin acknowledges that his ancestors were apes and suggests that man's belief in evolution is evidence supporting their shared ancestry with certain long-eared quadrupeds (donkeys). The significance of this piece lies not only in its artistic value but also its historical context. It emerged during a time when debates surrounding human origins and evolution were fervent and contentious. This particular caricature was published as a souvenir print within the pages of the London Sketch Book later that same year. Paul D. Stewart's masterful capture immortalizes this thought-provoking artwork—a symbol of scientific progress and intellectual discourse—allowing us to reflect upon our own understanding of humanity's complex journey through time.
