EDITORS COMMENTS
This striking monochrome print captures the distinguished visage of Cardinal Jean Du Bellay (1492-1560), a prominent French prelate, archbishop, and diplomat of the Roman Catholic Church during the Renaissance period. Born in Paris, Du Bellay rose through the ecclesiastical ranks, becoming a cardinal in 1536. He was also an accomplished writer, contributing significantly to the development of the French language through his influential works on grammar and eloquence. Du Bellay's diplomatic skills were put to good use in the service of the French monarchy. He played a pivotal role in the negotiations leading to the Peace of Nice in 1538, which ended the Italian Wars. His diplomatic missions took him to various European courts, including those of Henry VIII of England and Charles V of the Holy Roman Empire. As Archbishop of Paris from 1545 until his death, Du Bellay oversaw the administration of the archdiocese and worked to improve the living conditions of the clergy. He was also a patron of the arts and supported the development of the Sainte-Chapelle, a historic royal chapel in Paris. This print, produced by Mary Evans Prints Online, offers a glimpse into the life of a complex and accomplished figure of the Renaissance era. With his piercing gaze and serious expression, Cardinal Du Bellay embodies the intellectual and spiritual authority of the Catholic Church during this period. The monochrome format adds a timeless quality to the image, making it a fitting tribute to a man who left an indelible mark on French history.
