EDITORS COMMENTS
This evocative image captures a pivotal moment in Italian history as the Carbonari, a secret nationalist society dedicated to the unification of Italy, present themselves to Ferdinand I of the Two Sicilies in 1820. Previously known as Ferdinand IV of Naples, Ferdinand I ruled the Kingdom of the Two Sicilies, which encompassed southern Italy and Sicily. The Carbonari, whose name derives from the Italian word for charcoal burners, had long been active in fomenting rebellion against foreign rule and the establishment of a unified Italian state. In this photograph, a delegation of Carbonari members, clad in their distinctive red sashes and hats, are seen kneeling before the monarch, who sits regally on his throne. The atmosphere is tense, as the fate of the rebellion hangs in the balance. The Carbonari had hoped that Ferdinand I would support their cause and join them in their fight for Italian independence, but instead, he chose to side with the Austrian and French forces that sought to quell the uprising. The failure of the Carbonari to gain the support of Ferdinand I marked a turning point in the Italian unification movement. The society was forced to go underground, and many of its members were arrested, exiled, or executed. However, the spirit of Italian nationalism continued to grow, and the Carbonari's efforts laid the groundwork for the eventual unification of Italy under the House of Savoy in 1861. This photograph, taken from the extensive collection of historical images at Mary Evans Picture Library, offers a fascinating glimpse into a pivotal moment in Italian history, as the Carbonari's quest for national unity came up against the forces of European power politics.
