This evocative photograph captures the young and determined face of Captain Charles de Gaulle during his service in the French Army during the First World War. Born on November 22, 1890, in Lille, France, de Gaulle would go on to become one of the most iconic figures in French history. At the outbreak of the First World War in 1814, de Gaulle, a second lieutenant in the 135th Infantry Regiment, was among the first to answer the call to arms. In this image, taken during the war years, he is seen in his military uniform, exuding a sense of authority and resolve that would come to define his leadership style. De Gaulle's military career during the First World War was marked by a series of promotions and distinguished service. He was wounded twice and decorated for his bravery.
