Captain Cook Monument, Gisborne, North Island, New Zealand

Monument to Captain James Cook at Gisborne, on the east coast of the North Island, New Zealand. The monument was erected in 1994. Part of the inscription reads: " Here on the 9th and 10th of October, 1769 Cook walked with men from HM Bark Endeavour seeking fresh food and water. Nearby on the river rock Toka-a-Taiau, Maori chief and English greeted one another. When traditional challenges were misunderstood Maori were killed, the ship sailed without provisions and thus Poverty Bay received its name. From here, the Endeavour circumnavigated New Zealand and Cook plotted the first map of this country."

EDITORS COMMENTS
This evocative photograph captures the majestic Captain Cook Monument standing proudly on the coast of Gisborne, North Island, New Zealand. Erected in 1994, the monument commemorates the historic encounter between Captain James Cook and the Maori people on October 9-10, 1769. The inscription on the monument reads, "Here on the 9th and 10th of October, 1769 Cook walked with men from HM Bark Endeavour seeking fresh food and water. Nearby on the river rock Toka-a-Taiau, Maori chief and English greeted one another." However, the traditional challenges and customs of the Maori people were misunderstood, leading to the deaths of several Maori and the departure of the Endeavour without vital provisions. As a result, the area came to be known as Poverty Bay. From this location, Cook and his crew circumnavigated New Zealand and plotted the first accurate map of the country. The monument stands as a testament to the heroic exploration and navigation achievements of Captain Cook, who played a significant role in the European discovery and exploration of New Zealand. The monument also serves as a reminder of the cultural interactions between the Maori people and European explorers, and the complex history that unfolded as a result. The monument's design is simple yet elegant, with a bronze statue of Captain Cook gazing out to sea, symbolizing his unyielding spirit of discovery and exploration. The monument is a must-visit destination for history buffs, culture enthusiasts, and anyone interested in the rich history of New Zealand and its people.
