EDITORS COMMENTS
April 6, 1652: A Historical Moment in Time - The Arrival of Jan van Riebeeck at the Cape of Good Hope This evocative image captures the historic moment when Jan van Riebeeck, on behalf of the Dutch East India Company, first set foot on the shores of the Cape of Good Hope. The date was April 6, 1652, and the location was the rugged and breathtakingly beautiful coastline of what would later become Cape Town, South Africa. Van Riebeeck, a seasoned Dutch soldier and explorer, had been sent by the Dutch East India Company to establish a refreshment station for Dutch ships sailing between Europe and the Far East. The Cape of Good Hope, with its strategic location at the southern tip of Africa, offered a vital stopping point for weary sailors and their ships, providing much-needed fresh water, food, and repairs. As van Riebeeck and his small party disembarked from their ship, the Dromedaris, they were met with a mix of awe and trepidation. The vast, uncharted wilderness stretched out before them, teeming with unfamiliar sights, sounds, and smells. Yet, van Riebeeck was undeterred. With determination and a sense of purpose, he set about establishing a fort and a small settlement, which would later grow into the thriving city of Cape Town. Over the next ten years, van Riebeeck would govern the Cape Colony, facing numerous challenges and hardships, including conflict with the indigenous Khoikhoi people and the harsh realities of life in a remote and isolated outpost. But through it all, he remained steadfast in his mission, laying the foundations for a rich and complex history that would shape the future of South Africa and the world. This powerful image, captured from the Mary Evans Prints Online collection, offers a glimpse into a pivotal moment in history, a moment that forever changed the course of human history in South Africa and beyond.
