This evocative photograph captures the majestic TRS Liemba, a German passenger and cargo ferry, docked at Kigoma, the largest town on the shores of Lake Tanganyika in East Africa. Built in 1913 as the Graf von Goetzen, the ship served as a vital transportation link between Germany's colonies in East Africa and Europe. With a length of 113 meters and a capacity to carry up to 500 passengers and 2,500 tons of cargo, the Liemba was a true engineering marvel of the 1920s. The image portrays the Liemba's imposing presence as it sits serenely on the tranquil waters of Lake Tanganyika, surrounded by the lush greenery of the African shoreline. The ship's distinctive navy blue hull, adorned with the German national flag, stands out against the clear blue sky. The dockworkers, dressed in their colorful attire, can be seen loading and unloading cargo from the ship, demonstrating the essential role the Liemba played in the region's transportation network.
