EDITORS COMMENTS
This evocative 15th-century print depicts a lively and diverse group of Canterbury Pilgrims, assembled for their April excursion to the shrine of Saint Thomas Becket in Canterbury, England. The pilgrims, who famously narrated Geoffrey Chaucer's Canterbury Tales, represent a cross-section of the medieval population. In the foreground, a well-dressed merchant, with a fur-lined cloak and a hat adorned with a feather, engages in animated conversation with a humbly dressed peasant woman, her apron filled with provisions for the journey. Nearby, a knight in shining armor, with a squire carrying his shield, stands tall and proud, while a friar, with a simple brown habit and a rosary in hand, offers blessings to the group. The women, dressed in long, flowing gowns and headdresses, add grace and elegance to the scene. A young, blushing bride, with a veil covering her face, is accompanied by her husband, a burly man with a jester's cap and bells. An older woman, with a wimple and a rosary, offers a prayerful gaze towards the heavens. The men, dressed in tunics and hose, and the women, in gowns and headdresses, are all suitably attired for an excursion in April, with some wearing cloaks and others carrying parasols to shield themselves from the elements. The print, with its intricate details and vibrant colors, transports us back to the 15th century, allowing us to witness a snapshot of English history and the rich tapestry of medieval life.
