EDITORS COMMENTS
This Carte-de-Visite (CDV) photograph captures Augusta of Hesse (1811-1890), Duchess of Cambridge, in an elegant and regal pose. Born Princess Augusta of Hesse and by Rhine, she married Prince Adolphus, Duke of Cambridge, in 1818, making her a British princess and the wife of the fifth son of King George III. Augusta's stunning crinoline gown, popular in the late 1800s, adds to her graceful appearance in this photograph, taken around 1889. The crinoline, a large hoop skirt, was a symbol of femininity and wealth during this era. Augusta's connection to British royalty began when she married Prince Adolphus, who served as the Governor-General of India from 1833 to 1842. Her husband's military career took them to India, where they spent several years. Augusta was known for her charitable works and her support of various causes, including the establishment of the Royal Indian Military Orphan Fund. The Duchess of Cambridge is depicted here with a serene expression and a gentle smile, reflecting her refined and compassionate nature. Her title as a British princess and her German heritage made her a unique figure in the royal family, and this photograph offers a glimpse into the life of a remarkable woman who played an important role in British and Indian history. This photograph, taken in the late 19th century, is a testament to the elegance and sophistication of the time, as well as the enduring legacy of the British monarchy. The intricate details of Augusta's gown and the delicate folds of her veil add to the overall beauty and allure of this image.
