EDITORS COMMENTS
This striking photograph print, sourced from Mary Evans Picture Library, captures Adolphus Frederick, 1st Duke of Cambridge (1774-1850), a prominent military figure and the eldest son of King George III. The Duke is depicted here in his full military regalia, complete with a tall hat adorned with a plume, giving an air of authority and distinction. Born on October 31, 1774, Adolphus Frederick was the eldest surviving son of King George III and Queen Charlotte. He served in the British Army for over 60 years and held numerous military posts, including Commander-in-Chief of the British Army from 1812 to 1820. The Duke's military career was marked by several significant achievements, including his service during the Napoleonic Wars. He was present at the Battle of Waterloo in 1815, where he commanded the British cavalry reserve. Adolphus Frederick's granddaughter, Mary of Teck (later known as Queen Mary), is also featured in this historical narrative. Mary, who was born in 1867, went on to marry the future King George V in 1893. The Duke, therefore, is the grandfather of Queen Mary, making him an important figure in the British royal lineage. This photograph print, taken likely in the late 1800s, offers a glimpse into the past, providing a tangible connection to the rich history of British royalty and military tradition. The image, with its intricate details and excellent preservation, invites us to explore the stories of the past and the lives of the people who shaped history.
