EDITORS COMMENTS
This stunning photograph captures the majestic figurehead of the historic ship, Caledonia, which once graced the bow of the Royal Sovereign-class battleship HMS Caledonia. The figurehead, carved from wood and intricately detailed, depicts a warrior queen holding a trident and wearing a diadem adorned with maple leaves and thistles, symbolizing Scotland and England's union under the British monarchy. The Caledonia figurehead was originally carved in 1810 for the transport ship HMS Caledonia, which served in the Napoleonic Wars. In 1860, the figurehead was transferred to the newly built battleship HMS Caledonia, where it remained until 1906 when the ship was decommissioned and broken up for scrap. The photograph was taken at Shotley, Suffolk, where the figurehead was housed in the barracks after being removed from the ship. The image showcases the figurehead standing proudly, surrounded by the rough, textured background of the barracks, highlighting its intricate details and grandeur. The Caledonia figurehead is a testament to the rich maritime history of England and the intricacy and craftsmanship of the naval ships of the past. Its presence in the barracks serves as a reminder of the proud naval heritage of Shotley and the important role that ships and figureheads played in shaping the history of the British Isles.
