Bede Beginning Caedmon Call D Ream Divine Flourished Herdsman Received Sing Things

EDITORS COMMENTS
This evocative print depicts Caedmon, the legendary 7th-century Anglo-Saxon poet and herdsman, in the midst of his divine inspiration. According to the Venerable Bede's "Ecclesiastical History of the English People," Caedmon, who lived around 658 AD, was an illiterate herdsman who tended to the cattle of the monastery at Whitby, North Yorkshire. One fateful night, as he tended to his herd, Caedmon was visited in a dream by an angel who instructed him to sing about the "beginning of things." Surprised by this command, Caedmon replied that he could not create such poetry as he was unlearned. The angel, however, assured him that he would be given the words to sing. The following morning, Caedmon approached the abbess Hilda and her company, who were gathered for a feast, and offered to sing for them. To everyone's astonishment, he began to recite a hymn in praise of the Creator, using beautiful and poetic language that far surpassed the expectations of those present. This marked the beginning of Caedmon's remarkable career as a poet, making him one of the earliest recorded figures in Old English literature. Caedmon's poetry, which included hymns, religious verse, and secular songs, flourished around 680 AD and helped to establish the Anglo-Saxon poetic tradition. This print captures the essence of Caedmon's humble beginnings, his divine inspiration, and his enduring legacy as a pioneering poet in English literary history.
