EDITORS COMMENTS
This charming photograph captures a young and determined Charles William Anderson Scott, better known as C.W.A. Scott, as a little boy showcasing his early fascination with speed on his wooden bicycle. Born on 13 February 1903, Scott would go on to become one of England's most celebrated aviators, best known for winning the prestigious MacRobertson Air Race in 1934. In this image, Scott, dressed in a simple shirt and shorts, sits confidently atop his vintage bicycle, his eyes focused intently on the horizon. The wooden bicycle, with its large wheels and streamlined design, mirrors the sleek lines of the aircraft that would later carry him to record-breaking heights. As a child, Scott's love for speed and adventure was already evident. He would often be found tinkering with machines and pushing the limits of whatever vehicle he could get his hands on. This early interest in mechanics and engineering would serve him well in his future career as a pilot and aviator. Scott's achievements in aviation are numerous. He joined the Royal Flying Corps in 1921 and went on to become a flight lieutenant in the Royal Air Force, earning the Air Force Cross for his bravery during World War II. But it was his victory in the MacRobertson Air Race that cemented his place in history. Flying at breakneck speeds across the vast expanse of the Australian outback, Scott and his navigator, Andy Beaver, set a new record for the longest air race in history, covering a distance of over 11,000 miles in just under 7 days. This photograph is a poignant reminder of the humble beginnings of a remarkable man who would go on to push the boundaries of what was thought possible in the realm of aviation. With a spirit of determination and a love for speed that began on this very bicycle, C.W.A. Scott left an indelible mark on the world of flight.
