Bulent Rauf

Bulent Rauf (1911 - 1987) - the grandson of Ismail Pasha, Vice-regent of Egypt, the family having close connections to the Ottoman imperial house. In 1945 he married his second cousin, Princess Faiza of Egypt, the sister of King Farouk of Egypt. He divorced in the early 1960s and in 1966 he settled in England, subsequently marrying his second wife Angela Culme Seymour. Rauf devoted many years of his life to the establishing of a body of knowledge based on an understanding of the absolute unity of existence. He was instrumental in the establishment of the Beshara Trust and subsequently the Beshara School of Intensive Esoteric Education at Chisholme House in the Scottish Borders, where since 1975 hundreds of students have studied the fundamentals of spirituality. He was first president of the Muhyiddin Ibn Arabi Society, dedicated to the promulgation of the works of the great Andalusian mystic. His chief literary work was the complete rendering into English of Ibn Arabis Fusus al-Hikam (Settings of Wisdom), incorporating the Turkish commentary attributed to Ismail Hakki Bursevi. He was engaged in translation, research work and counselling until his death in 1987. Date: 1985

In this photograph, Bulent Rauf, a prominent figure in the realm of spirituality and esoteric knowledge, is seen in the late 1980s, a few years before his passing. Bulent Rauf, born in 1911, was a descendant of the esteemed Ismail Pasha, Vice-regent of Egypt, and held close connections to the Ottoman imperial house. In 1945, he married his second cousin, Princess Faiza of Egypt, who was the sister of King Farouk of Egypt. Their marriage ended in the early 1960s. Later in life, Rauf settled in England and married his second wife, Angela Culme Seymour. He dedicated many years of his life to the establishment of a profound body of knowledge based on the understanding of the absolute unity of existence. Rauf was a pioneer in the founding of the Beshara Trust and subsequently the Beshara School of Intensive Esoteric Education at Chisholme House in the Scottish Borders. Since 1975, this institution has welcomed hundreds of students, who have studied the fundamentals of spirituality under Rauf's guidance. Rauf's commitment to the propagation of spiritual wisdom extended beyond the Beshara School. He was the first president of the Muhyiddin Ibn Arabi Society, an organization dedicated to the dissemination of the works of the great Andalusian mystic. His most significant literary achievement was the complete rendering into English of Ibn Arabi's Fusus al-Hikam (Settings of Wisdom), which included the Turkish commentary attributed to Ismail Hakki Bursevi. Throughout his life, Rauf was deeply engaged in translation, research work, and counselling, and his dedication to the pursuit of spiritual truths continued until his death in 1987.
