EDITORS COMMENTS
This exquisite oval portrait captures Georges-Louis Leclerc, Count of Buffon (1707-1788), the renowned French naturalist and encyclopedist, in a moment of deep contemplation. Buffon, who is often referred to as the "French Linnaeus," was a leading figure of the Enlightenment and a key contributor to the development of modern science. Born in Montbard, France, Buffon received a classical education before turning his attention to natural history. He began his career as a writer and editor, producing numerous works on various scientific topics. In 1739, he was appointed as the director of the Jardin du Roi, the Royal Garden in Paris, where he carried out extensive research on natural history. Buffon's most famous work, "Natural History, General and Particular," was published between 1748 and 1767. This 36-volume encyclopedia covered a wide range of natural history topics, from botany and zoology to geology and mineralogy. Buffon's groundbreaking theories on the age of the Earth and the origins of species challenged the prevailing scientific orthodoxy of his time and laid the foundation for modern scientific thought. In this portrait, Buffon is depicted in a relaxed pose, seated at a table with a book spread open before him. The richly decorated Rococo setting, with its gilded frames and intricate patterns, serves as a fitting backdrop for the intellectual and scientific achievements of this remarkable man. The inset card identifies Buffon as "Louis Georges Leclerc, Comte de Buffon," and the date of 1788 is inscribed at the bottom of the image. This evocative portrait offers a glimpse into the world of one of history's greatest naturalists and encyclopedists, a man whose curiosity and intellect helped shape our understanding of the natural world.
