8 June 1859: The French Enter Milan and Are Given a Warm Reception This historic photograph captures a pivotal moment in Italian history as the French army, led by Napoleon III, marches into Milan on June 8, 1859. The Second Italian War of Independence had been raging for over a month, with the French and Sardinian forces united against the Austrian Empire. The fall of Milan was a significant turning point in the war. The city, which had been under Austrian rule since 1521, was a symbol of Italian resistance and longed for unity and independence. As the French army approached, the people of Milan welcomed them with open arms, eager to embrace the promise of a new future. In this image, the French troops can be seen entering the city through the Porta Ticinese, one of Milan's ancient gates. The crowd that has gathered to greet them is a sea of color, with men, women, and children waving flags and cheering. The French soldiers, many of whom are wearing the iconic kepis blancs, return the gesture with smiles and waves. The warm reception given to the French army marked the beginning of a new era for Milan and Italy as a whole. The city would remain under French control until 1861, when it was ceded to the newly formed Kingdom of Italy. The Second Italian War of Independence ultimately led to the unification of Italy under King Victor Emmanuel II, marking the end of foreign rule and the beginning of a new Italian nation.
