EDITORS COMMENTS
This exquisite photograph captures the heartwarming moment of the betrothal of the Duke of York, later King George VI, and Lady Elizabeth Bowes-Lyon, who would later be known as The Queen Mother, at Glamis Castle in January 1923. The Duke of York, second in line to the British throne, and Lady Elizabeth, a Scottish aristocrat and granddaughter of the 14th Earl of Strathmore and Kinghorne, had been introduced by the Queen Mother, Queen Mary, in 1920. Their engagement was announced on January 26, 1923, and the couple's betrothal took place at Glamis Castle, the ancestral home of the Bowes-Lyon family. The image shows the couple standing in front of a grand fireplace, with the Duke of York in military uniform and Lady Elizabeth wearing a simple yet elegant dress and a tiara. The Duke is holding a bouquet of flowers, while Lady Elizabeth places her hand gently on his arm. The warmth and affection between them are palpable, making this photograph a beautiful representation of their deep connection. Glamis Castle, located in Angus, Scotland, has a rich history and has been the ancestral home of the Bowes-Lyon family since the 14th century. The castle's grandeur and historic significance add to the regal atmosphere of the photograph, making it a fitting location for this significant moment in British royal history. The Duke of York and Lady Elizabeth were married on April 26, 1923, at Westminster Abbey, and went on to have five children together. King George VI ascended to the throne in 1936, following the abdication of his brother, King Edward VIII. The Queen Mother, who was a constant source of support and strength to her husband throughout his reign, passed away in 2002 at the age of 101. This photograph serves as a poignant reminder of their enduring love and the beginning of a remarkable royal legacy.
